2015 Wine Bottle Centerpiece

When the Christmas parties have come and gone you might find yourself with a recycling bin full of wine and champagne bottles. Put a few of those to good use in your New Year’s Eve decor!

2015 Wine Bottle Centerpiece | New Year's Eve | Vicky Barone

Supplies: four glass bottles, metallic spray paint, glitter scrapbook paper, numbers stencil, stem wire, tape, and curling ribbon.

Directions:
1. Thoroughly clean the glass bottles. To remove the labels, soak in hot soapy water for ten minutes and peel away labels. Remove any remaining glue with Goo Gone or nail polish remover. After using Goo Gone, clean the bottles again with warm soapy water. Let dry completely.
2. In a well-ventilated area (we always suggest doing this outside!), spray the bottles with the spray paint according to directions on the can. Let dry completely.
3. Trace the numbers onto the glitter scrapbook paper and cut out.
4. Tape stem wire to the back of the numbers.
5. Put stems into the bottles (fold or cut any stems that are too long).
6. Cut pieces of curling ribbon and curl using scissors. Add ribbons to the mouth of the bottles and around the bases of the bottles.

Place this centerpiece in the middle of the dinner table or on an entryway table or coffee table. It’s fun and festive and can be used again and again! (Just don’t forget to change the date next year 😉 )

DIY Halloween Mobile

We saw this bat chandelier while flipping through the Pottery Barn Kids catalog and knew we could make out own for a fraction of the price. It’s not longer available on the site, so if you like it, keep scrolling to learn how to make your own!

DIY Halloween Mobile | Vicky Barone

Supplies: 2 wood embroidery hoops (one smaller than the other), black acrylic paint, a paint brush, black hemp or string, bat cut-outs or stickers, black glitter organza, scissors, and a hot glue gun.

Directions:
1. Remove the outer part of each wooden hoop and set aside. You will only need the inner hoops.
2. Paint the inner hoops black with acrylic paint. Let dry completely.
3. Attach bats to lengths of string and tie at varying heights onto both hoops. We used bat stickers that we stuck together to sandwich the string between them, mixed with some papet cut-outs attached with hot glue.
4. Tie four long pieces of black string equidistant apart on the lower hoop then attach those four strings to the upper hoop. If there is enough string, tie all four pieces together in the center to hang the mobile. If not, attach more string to create a place to hang the mobile.
5. Measure the inside of the larger hoop and cut a piece of organza the same length. Cut the organza in half down the middle, making wavy cuts.
6. Using hot glue, attach one half of the organza strip to the inside of the larger hoop. Do the same with the other half on the smaller hoop and cut excess organza.

You can fill the mobile with lots of bats, or use other Halloween-inspired shapes! Hang this in an entry way or over a table for a spooky touch to your Halloween decor. Enjoy!

DIY Inspirational Banner

This is one of our favorite DIY projects we’ve done for the blog: an inspirational banner to hang on the wall! We used some discount fabrics from the remnants bins at Joann’s and my motto: “Celebrate Everything” to create this happy banner. We are so pleased to share it with you today.

DIY Inspirational Banner | Vicky Barone

Supplies:
– Linen or muslin fabric for the banner
– Two shades of teal fabric
– A print out of the design you would like to use as a stencil
– A wooden dowel
– Fabric scissors and pointed scissors
– Hot glue (We used E6000, but it leaked through the fabric and did not dry as quickly)
Mod Podge
– A paint brush
Baker’s twine
– A sewing machine or needle and thread (both optional)

You can find all of these items at your local craft store!

Directions:
1. Cut the banner fabric into a rectangle (Ours was about 8.5″ x 12″).
2. Cut the two teal fabrics into strips about an inch wider and longer than the words you’d like them to read.
3. Use the paint brush to coat both sides of each strip of fabric with Mod Podge and let dry. This will stiffen the fabric and make it easier to cut into words. It will also keep the fabrics from fraying at the edges when you cut them!
4. Cut out the words from the stencil using pointed scissors or an X-acto knife
5. Use the paper words as a stencil on the stiffened strips of fabric. Cut out the words from the fabric using the pointed scissors or an X-acto knife.
6. Paint more Mod Podge to the backs of the words and attach them to the fabric banner. Let dry.
7. Flip the banner over and fold the bottom of the rectangle into a point. We used a sewing machine to sew around the perimeter of the banner to hold the corners down and create a small hem, but you can sew it by hand OR just use a hot glue gun.
8. Cut the wooden dowel to the length you’d like using scissors (or a hand saw if you’re using a thicker dowel!). Ours was about an inch and a half longer on both sides of the banner.
9. Fold the top of the banner around the wooden dowel and use hot glue to attach it to itself on the other side (Do not glue the banner to the dowel. The dowel should be able to rotate freely).
10. Tie a piece of baker’s twine to both ends of the dowel. Hang up your banner and enjoy!
