10 things you can do to add some KINDNESS to the world today

Yes, these suggestions have all been published before in countless places already. But I think the more we’re reminded of the big impact we can have through simple gestures, the more apt we are to actually do them ourselves. So, here’s a list of small things we can do to have a big impact on the world and people around us today:

  1. Buy someone a coffee
I haven’t been out-and-about that much lately, but when I am, sometimes I treat myself to a coffee at Starbucks. In the past 2 weeks I’ve bought coffee for the car behind me a total of 5 times (don’t judge me – I need a lot of coffee apparently). The other day I really needed a pick-me-up because my elderly dog had me up most of the night, I was in the middle of a slightly-more-challenging remote learning day with my two children and also had my own work deliverables looming. As I drove up to the cashier to get my coffee, they told me that the car in front of me had paid for it already. The kindness you give to the world comes right back at you when you need it most.
  2. Call a lonely friend or family member
The holidays this year look very different for most of us. I live approximately 6 hours away from my parents. Our family has chosen to stay safe and apart during the entire pandemic, so it has been hard not to see them during our regular visits. When I’m feeling especially lonely, I pick up the phone can call them. Usually, they’re feeling it too and we can enjoy each other’s company in a completely different way.
  3. Donate coats to children
Every year our local news station, WRAL has a coat drive for children. I’m usually too busy or distracted this time of year with school parties, getting ready to travel, and the general hectic nature of the holidays. This year I took the time to go through all of our winter hats, gloves and old coats thinking I wouldn’t find much. Guess what? I found 2 huge garbage bags full of warm clothes to donate! Not only did it feel good knowing that children will be warm because of this donation, but it also felt good to clean out things we no longer need. Speaking of which…
  4. Donate clothes and other items you no longer need
This, again, takes time…and yes, this sounds suspiciously like #3 but is meant to be broader in nature. Back in April, I did this once because I was starting to feel stir-crazy and needed to feel productive. What a great time to organize! But after going through all of our winter clothes, I dove deeper than I have since we first moved into our house over 10 years ago. And I literally brought car loads of stuff to donation centers. Why in the world was I keeping all of this stuff? It feels GREAT that someone else will be able to use the things that were sitting in closets and untouched for years. I read Marie Kondo’s book The Live Changing Magic of Tidying Up about 4 years ago and thought I had already done this.  It turns out, doing it again from a completely different mindset is what I actually needed. Now it feels like 2021 will arrive with less baggage, literally.
  5. Donate money to your local food pantry
This one seems obvious enough, but I need to include it here because there are SO MANY people who are facing a food shortage. We’re living through unprecedented times. If you’re looking for a last-minute gift for someone, donate food in their name either locally or though organizations like Feeding America.
  6. Give the people who support you a small gift of appreciation
There are many people in our lives who work in the background supporting us. Giving them a token of appreciation goes a long way…even if you just give them a hand-written card. People like your mail carrier (who is definitely over-worked this holiday season) would love this and it will feel good too.
  7. Send a card
You knew this one would be on my list (or maybe you didn’t) because I’ve been a greeting card designer and writer for over 20 years. I’ve dedicated my entire career to supporting this gesture. Sending or receiving something in the mail is pretty magical. It’s something that brings joy in a different way than receiving a digital message. Even if you didn’t send a Christmas card with the perfect (or in our case, not-ever-perfect) picture of your family this year, send your close friends a quick hand-written card. They will appreciate it more than you know.
  8. Tell someone you are grateful for them
Our words have power. Verbalizing something as simple as this can change someone’s whole perspective.
  9. Find some time to do something to take care of yourself.
Being kind to yourself is being kind to the world. Remember to listen to your inner voice and give yourself time to recharge, reflect and find some peace. Doing this will ensure you can remain centered and put your best foot forward. I bet there are more people than you know looking to you for cues about how to be. Giving the world your best self will create ripples of positivity in your circle and beyond.
  10. Smile at a stranger
In the age of COVID and masks this one is harder to do than you may think. But there are moments when you make eye contact with another driver or when you’re out somewhere without your mask because you’re far enough apart. Smile at someone. Strike up a random conversation about something. Making these little connections is still so important because it can remind us that we’re not as alone as we may sometimes feel.
  11. Give or send someone a Kindness Card
Now you’re wondering why my list of 10 things has 11. “Vicky, did you not have your coffee this morning?”. Well, no, I haven’t had enough…clearly this is the 11th thing in my list. But I had to include it because I’m giving away FREE Kindness Cards on my website. They are artful reminders that include messages of encouragement to spread some kindness in the world. We need it now more than ever. Get yours HERE. For only the cost of shipping, you can get a set of 30 cards to keep for yourself or to pass on to someone who needs a little more kindness.

Thanks for reading my list, if in fact, you made it all the way through. Imagine if we all did just one of these things every day. Together we can change the world. Kindness. Pass it on.

Happy Holidays from my little over-caffeinated corner of the world to yours. I wish each and every one of you a Happy and Healthy New Year.

Spread Joy, Not Germs, This Holiday Season With These Holiday Postcards

The holidays are about coming together and giving thanks. Take any Christmas classic and you’ll find that message. The jolly Whoville people and the mean, old Grinch, the bitter Ebenezer Scrooge and the generous Cratchits, even noble Rudolph and his judgmental fellow reindeers all came together in the end (despite them calling out his red nose!). This year, however, “coming together” is going to look a little different, but that doesn’t mean we can’t give thanks especially to those who deserve it.

Think about all the people who make your life easier– your hairdresser, dog walker, babysitter, or child’s teacher. Thanks to all the hard work they do, you can enjoy a little free time to yourself or stress a little less about your children. This year, more than ever, it’s important to recognize their efforts with a holiday tip.

You can spread joy, without spreading germs, by sending them the appropriate tip accompanied by a meaningful postcard. Download these free holiday printables to give to a service worker this holiday season!

Travel Tips for a Fun, Safe, & Adventurous Year

Have any fun trips coming up? Today we’re sharing some simple travel tips to get you and your home ready for your next adventure!

1. Leave early || I hate to stress about being late for flights and prefer to leave early. This way, I can relax and enjoy my travel instead of the inevitable sprint to the gate!
2. Pack healthy snacks || I always make sure I have my own healthy snack with me and purchase a bottle of water at the airport before I get on a plane.
3. Bring fun activities to pass the time || I like to have a number of activities to do while I’m on the plane that are readily accessible in my carry-on item. If my boys are with me, I make sure they have lots of movie options lined up too!
4. Pack lightly || I try not to over-pack my carry-on because I’m always concerned I won’t be able to lift it up into the overhead bin on my own. To lessen the load even more, I swap out paper books for a downloaded version on my iPad!
5. Stay fully-charged || I like to make sure my phone and iPad are fully charged before I leave for a trip, but I also bring readily-accessible chargers just in case.
6. Expect the unexpected || In the event that my checked luggage goes missing or is delayed, I like to have a couple day’s worth of medicine, toiletries, and clothing in my carry-on. I also pack an extra pair of headphones just in case!
7. Prep your home || Before any kind of travels, I like to make sure my house is nice and clean and all the lights and appliances are turned off and unplugged. Most importantly, I make sure my house is well-protected while I’m away. Simplisafe has provided us with a printable travel checklist to make sure your home is ready-to-go before a trip! Online Seller Tax Tips

Tax day has come and gone (thank goodness!) and we are excited for a fresh new tax year! Our goal for 2016 is to be even more organized than ever. If you’re an online seller like us, we have an awesome info-graphic to share from the US Tax Center, an educational hub for all things tax related and great when filing taxes online. We hope this makes your 2016 taxes even easier!

IRS.com Online Seller Checklist | Vicky Barone | Online Seller Tax Tips

Being an online-seller has been a fun and fulfilling experience over the past three years. Selling my artwork on Etsy and other e-commerce sites has helped gain exposure for my brand and offered a way for fans of my work to purchase some of my artwork directly! We have also been able to connect with charities and donate pieces to help benefit local organizations. Even though e-commerce is just a small piece of what I offer as an artist and illustrator, it is still so important to make sure I am filing my taxes correctly and efficiently.
The US tax Center’s goal is to serve as a place for people with a variety of tax questions and provide the best e-filing service on the web. Have any questions? They are here to help! You can find them right here.
Have any other tips to get the most out of your taxes as a small business owner? We’d love to hear!

How did you come up with your blog name?

My blog name is just my name since I’ve been using my name and logo on the back of my greeting cards for over 15 years.

Why did you start your blog?
It’s a wonderful way for me to not only keep up with creative projects I’d like to do in my own life, but also to organize my thoughts and share things that I admire or inspire me.

What do you love most about blogging?
Sharing my thoughts/ideas/projects with other people and ultimately feeling more connected.  Having my studio at home is a blessing in so many ways, but sometimes it also feels isolating.  Blogging has given me a new outlet to connect with other people.

What’s one goal you wish to accomplish this year?

Spending more time meditating and/or doing yoga to clear my head and find some peace and silence amongst the wonderful chaos that comes with being a mom to 2 young children.

What is your favorite social media site?

Pinterest.  Whenever I’m looking for inspiration, new recipes, or creativity, I always seem to find it here (although if I’m careful, sometimes I spiral away from the original reason I was there!).

How would you describe your personal style?

Relaxed and comfortable with a little hint of style thrown in…

I love to include one interesting thing, whether it be a purse or an accessory – but I tend to shy away from trends that don’t work for me – especially ones that make me look even shorter than I already am!

Plus, having comfort is a must since I spend a lot of time chasing after little people.

If you could choose one store to shop at for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Ann Taylor Loft.  While I love a variety of different stores and styles, they always have an amazing selection of petite styles – which is perfect for my towering 4’11”.

What is one fear you would like to conquer?
Being alone.  I’ve always been a social person and thrive when I spend time with people.  But I’ve been learning to enjoy and relish those fleeting moments when it’s just me.
