DIY Paper Strip Garland

Here’s a fun detail from our End of Summer Party! We loved the Paper Mobile by Oh Happy Day and thought it would add the perfect touch to our bright outdoor set up.
For step-by-step instructions, check out the paper mobile link above, or take a look at our Circle Paper Garland blog post! I will say, however, that the strips of paper are a bit harder to sew together than the circle garland was. I found that adjusting the needle thread tension on my sewing machine to a lower setting while using a straight stitch helped a lot! If you find your thread snapping or getting caught, try loosening your stitch and tension before calling it quits. Or call it quits and make the circle garland instead (can you tell we’re partial to the circle garland? It might just be the quickest sewing project ever.)!

DIY Memory Game

This week we made our very own memory game using family pictures! Pinhole Press makes a beautiful set of customized memory game pieces that make for a great gift! This, of course, inspired us to make our own! It’s a little time consuming, but overall it was a fun project that turned out looking great. The kids love it, and get really excited when they flip over the pieces to reveal pictures of themselves!

We’ve even attached some free PDFs of Vicky Barone’s signature chevron design in three colors so you can print your own! Scroll down and click on the color you like to download it. There are six squares per page so make sure you print four pages!

8_29_13_MemoryGame

Materials:
– 24 unfinished wood squares (we ordered ours from here and got them in 3×3 inch)
– Fine grain sandpaper
– Mod Podge
– Foam paint brush
– 12 pictures, printed twice (ours are about 2.75×2.75 inches)
– 24 pieces of patterned paper (Download a free PDF at the bottom! You can also use scrapbook paper or even just paint the back of each square. Just make sure you make them all the same!)

What to do:
– Sand the edges of each of the wood pieces and round the corners. They’re unfinished so they can have a lot of splinters and sharp corners.
– Paint a thin layer of Mod Podge on one side of a square and press on a picture. Let dry.
– Seal the picture using another thin layer of Mod Podge on top. Let dry.
– Once completely dry, repeat with the flip side of the wood square.

DIY Back To School Chalkboard

We have a very bittersweet DIY project today that you and your little ones are sure to enjoy. We’ve seen lots of different “First Day of School” pictures on Pinterest and we thought we’d make our own.

My oldest son just started Pre-K, so he and I decorated a little framed chalkboard to commemorate his big day. He loves to paint (and he LOVES the color red) so this project was right up his alley.

Materials: Chalkboard, acrylic paint, painter’s tape, a foam brush, and chalk (you can find all of these things at any craft store).

What to do: Tape off the chalkboard with painter’s tape and paint the frame. Once the paint is dry, remove the tape and write on the board with chalk!

We hope you like our super easy project! It is sure to make for wonderful pictures and memories as the years go on.

New Artwork on Etsy: Farm Animals and World Map

We get so excited each time we publish new listings on Etsy! This month we introduced four new pieces of Canvas Wall Art that are now available. Check them out and let us know what you think!

Moo Cow Canvas Wall Art Baa Sheep Canvas Wall Art Oink Pig Canvas Wall Art
These farm animals crack us up. They are sold separately, but would look great together in a playroom or nursery where your child can moo, baa, and oink along with his or her new buddies!

Our Colorful World Canvas Wall Art
This world map is perfect for your child’s room, nursery, or playroom. It would also look great in a classroom as your little ones head back to school this Fall! The picture above features the 40×30 inch canvas, but we also have a 24X18 inch canvas available as well.

We’re rolling out new canvas wall art on a regular basis so be sure to follow Vicky Barone Designs on Etsy to stay in the loop! And don’t forget about the original art prints too!

Toddler Wisdom: Sit and Eat

I can’t believe our youngest son is 15-months-old! He is so sweet at this age and even though he can’t speak English very well (other than some harsh consonants that we struggle to interpret), he understands everything we say and even has a few key baby signs under his belt.

A few weeks ago, he pointed to a banana and made the sign for “more.”
Grabbing a banana and making my way over to his highchair I told him: “Okay, we can have a banana, but we have to sit and eat it!”
Without missing a beat, he plopped himself down in the middle of the kitchen floor and looked up at me expectantly.

Even without speaking, he has his own way of telling us the funniest things.
